2-stroke -- 4-stroke

Guys, Just thought I'd ask. 2-stroke or 4-stroke? I've been thinking about selling my TE570 and going to something smaller. I've noticed that a lot of you all and the TWMC are running 2-strokes. Are they better for the enduros and tight trails. I've been looking at a Husqvarna Cr250 that's for sale and if I were to get it, I'd put my suspension, rear 18" wheel, gearing sprockets, etc. from the TE570, so it would be more trail worthy. I'd also look for a 2.9-3.2 gal tank and a WR250 flywheel to give it more of that lug-ability that you get with the enduro or 4-strokes. The Cr has the close ratio 5-speed so it should do well for the desert stuff too.

Any input? And maybe I've been on a 4-stroke so long that I forgot how much work it takes with the 2-stroke. I just don't know. Just looking for input.

Placelast, no inside story, Eel and I are just trying to connect on his older Husky Wr. Maybe for my son.

Also, I've been reading some other post on other sites and trying to remember what my 2-stroke was like. I like I said, may have become to a custom to the linear power and ease associated with riding the 4-stroke. we'll see, for now I'm going to regear my countershaft to a 13 from a 14 for summer track stuff and put on fresh tires and just ride and be content. Before I know it, it will be Desert season again and I'd be wishing for that big 4-stroke if I got rid of it.

Honestly, they both have their pluses. I've switched to a KTM300 2 stroke and love it. But I still like my Yamaha 250F.

My KTM feels lighter (less top heavy) has a ton more power and I like the suspension better for the desert. (Both bikes have been set up be Pro Action, revalve and springs) The 250F I've now reserved for trail duty. Obviously, your 540 has more power than my 250F. So If you can't keep them both, then you need to decide what you want? Why would you trade the 540? Is there something you don't like about it?

If you do decide to go 2 stroke but like the 4 stroke grunt. I'd strongly recomend a 300. Both KTM and Gas Gas make them. They are not as pipey like the smaller bores and you can lug them if you want. IMO the KTM feels bigger and more spread out than the Gas Gas. The Gas Gas feels smaller and more compact. Also the Gas Gas motor tends to be smoother with less hit than the KTM.

Just to confuse you more, I rode Thumbs KTM 200 at our last outing. If you want a slim and small 125 feeling bike with more power than a typical 125, this bike cannot be beat. It also was awesome to ride.

Thanks for the input ScarTissue, It looks like I'll be keeping the 570 a bit longer. There is nothing wrong with it and it fits me very well. I guess I was just getting that light 2-stoke bug back being that it's summer and I'm at the tracks this time of year. The 570 is a big grunty bike and works so well in the desert and not bad on trails, but the light feel and quick power of the 2-stroke was calling me back, at least I thought. I had a KTM 300MXC and sold it last year. maybe I should have kept it, but I needed the cash to payoff the Husky. Overall, with my wifes input we will focus on getting my son a 125 and I'll have fun helping him with that. I'll keep the 570 for awhile and just change a few things on it.

I will say though, I was watching GNCC racing on video last night with my 6 year old and started having that 2-stroke envy again. If only I could afford both.

Dingoe: no problem - just thought you guys were talking bikes, and it's always good to hear other's experiences, good or bad. Moreover I thought you were going to talk about Huskies - a brand which has this intrique about it.

When looking for a bike for my son I rode the same model (as Eric's) up and down a dirt road and came away impressed with the delivery of that small motor plus the quality of materials/build - Eye-talian-made goods have a way of holding my attention (except for Zio, Elk and Tony - I'm not a guy-guy).

Thanks for the input Placelast, I've been happy with my past Husky's. Both have been 4-strokes, but I hear that the 2-stokes are the deal back in the Northeast. My son will need a heavy flywheel type bike that has good lug capabilities due to his lack of 2-stroke ride time. He's been on 4-stokes the hole time, so it will be an adjustment for sure. I assume that the WR model will ride more like true woods bike than a typical MX set-up.

We'll see.
