2-stroke vs. 4-stroke

I am very new to dirt bikes and am wondering what the big advantages and disadvantages are between a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke. Everybody is telling me to go with a 4-stroke 250 and others are saying 2-stroke 125. What will the major differences i will see between the two?
