My buddy has a 2001 CR250 that he swears up and down has 53hp at the wheel, stock. My 03 YZ250 has 44hp at the wheel and after he jumped off it, he proceeded to say my bike was faster. I don't think even this years CRF or YZF even topped 50 hp on the dyno. Does anyone know the ACTUAL hp numbers??

In the January issue of Dirtbike Magazine they had a shootout of the '03 250 class. The CR250 peaks at about 46HP and the YZ250 peaks at about 46HP also. The YZ's HP peaks at about 9000 RPMs and the CR peaks at 8000. And your right that none of the 450's produce 50HP but the YZF is the closest at 49HP.

The 2001 #s are less than the 2003. Still no danger of 53 at the wheel. I think the 2001 has 44 hp.

December 2000 issue of DirtRider magazine with the 2001 250 shootout.
Looks like the CR250 peaks at 44 hp at 8500 RPM :thumb:

I am 99% sure that the 2002/2003s have 2 more horsepower than the 2001. The 2002 has more mid-high and the 2003 was fiddled with to fix the complaining about the 'supposed' lack of low end.

Put a 50 tooth rear on the 2002/2003 like the 2001 had and get them jetted correctly....and it shouldn't feel slow in comparison anymore.

EDIT: well there it is...THANKS

December 2002 issue of DirtRider magazine....2003 250/450 shootout. Looks like the YZ250 peaks at 45hp at 8700 RPM and the CR250 peaks at 44hp at 8300 RPM.
Husqvarna was not included in this shootout.

Well I don't have a fancy picture but a recent MXA had both the CR250 and the YZ250 at 46hp each. I guess each person is going to have their own impressions of the power delivery.

In any case, I think we all agree that the 2001 isn't making 53 at the wheel.

I'm sure another CR250 or YZ250 of the same year wouldn't reproduce these exact numbers but you are correct, not even the 450's are getting over 50 in this graph. Interestingly enough, the KTM 250SX had the highest peak horsepower at around 49.5. If RC can't ride his '03CR because of too much power, just think how MC felt.........he retired! :)

THX a bunch guys...I knew it wasn't possible for his stock CR to be producing that much HP, but he's one of those guys that you have to have "official" proof befores he gives in.

I hate it when guys pull HP numbers out of their a$$....Ask your friend where he got that number...There's not a dyno around that has a stock cr250 or any other stock 250 putting out those kinds of numbers....Unless the dyno operator tries to get crafty and make the hp measurement in standard instead of the much more accurate sae setting...

I met this squid that had a 2002 r1.....I said "nice bike.....What will it do 180 mph(knowing what the top speed was from the magazine tests but asking the guy anyway just to make conversation) ?" He replies, "the top speed is 210"...

Yeah right, a hayabusa won't even do 210...He looks at his speedometer and it says 210 so he figures that's how fast it goes....I'll be willing to bet it was the guys first bike and he hadn't even been 100mph on it...

True, true. My friends brother claimed that his stock YZ426F was faster and had more power than a CR500......sometimes it doesn't take much research to know who is right.

Hate to talk about sportbikes here, but the '99 Hyabusa was un-goverened, so totally topped out it had a documented top-speed of about 203-205. The new Hyabusa's are capable of those speeds too. With the purchase of a chip, it will trick the governor into thinking that its in 5th gear instead of 6th allowing the machine to reach those speeds. A R-1 is a bit slower then that, heck, its a wee bit slower then the GSX-R1000. Needless to say, these bikes exceed the skill of 99.9 percent of the guys that own 'em anyway. Just my opinion since I see who buys'em (I sell'em). Bigger ain't always better, it's what you do with it!

why do most of you guys think a cr250 cant produce 60bhp + i have a 2000 cr250 engine in a kart which has been vastly modified and produced more than 60bhp at the wheels on two different dynos,we reach speeds of up to 145mph on circuits like silverstone with gearing of 23 tooth frt sprocket and 24 tooth rear sprocket.i dont doubt spectra has seen a cr producing that sort of bhp

He said a STOCK cr250. Nobody said they doubted Carmichael's CR produced 60, they just ask where he got the info.

Dirt Rider August 2002 Issue page 54. I was mistaken....actually says RC's bike produces "nearly" 60hp. A comment said that it had roughly 10 hp more to the wheels than a stock CR. So anywhere from 55-60hp for RC's bike.
