2002 cr250 engine change ?

I have a 2002 Honda cr250 and recently I took a chunk out of the left side crankcase when I threw a chain. I was wondering before I get a new case or a new engine (it's beyond welding up for a repair, when I say chunk I mean a CHUNK) has anyone tried to install a different engine (size, or make) into this frame. Of course mounts would have to be changed, but I have some time on my hands, and I may want to experiment with it if it's possible

A CR500 engine can be made to fit, with some welding and fabrication.

But you can replace one half of the engine cases for less than $200 if I recall correctly.

A 99 engine will fit in there with a bit of work as well. There are some instructions on another(TT) website.
