Greetings, I found an 02 Sherco 290 for sale locally and am contemplating making an offer if it looks to be in very nice shape when I go to look it over. I did a web search on this bike, but haven't found much information. Does anyone have any information to share as to the reliabilty of this bike, whether there are any particular issues I should be looking into, and what may be a reasonable price for a good specimen?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

-Glenn

Trials bikes are usually built with a bit more care and componant level than typical off road bikes and are typically cared for with a bit more reverence so chances are good that if the bike checks out it is in fine shape. Pricing is can vary quite a bit depending one demand in your area as trials bikes are very specialized. My guess would be in the $2000-2500 range.

I have 2 Shercos, one is an 02 290, the other one is a 125.
I have had zero issues with either. Both have been great bikes for me.
I agree with Patman....2000 to 2500 should get you covered.

That price range sounds about right. I did quite a bit of research earlier this year and finding a trials bike for less is difficult.
BTW, there is a event this weekend in Oklahoma and I hope to be there. May even compete so everyone can have some comic relief. LOL.

Eric Gorr has one that he bought used. Even though it was owned and ridden HARD by the amazing Smage brothers before Eric got it, the old Sherco has proven to be a good reliable bike.

Thanks

Guys, thanks for all the input. I am going to see the bike this weekend. The owner claims he bought it from a friend at the beginning of this season and liked trials riding so much he went out and bought a brand new Sherco 2.9. I was a little surprised that the technology has changed sufficiently since 02 to warrant that expense, particularly for someone who only began riding this year. But I guess a lot can change in 5 years.

Most of the bikes underwent major changes in '03, so anything newer than that will be basically the same. '02 and older will be a little different. They're still good bikes, though.

A 5 year old Sherco is still more than most of us need. Accept the good fate that the seller doesn't realize it, buy the bike and run! :)

Got the Bike

Hey folks, thanks again for the encouragement. I bought the 02 Sherco and got it for $2280. I think its a good deal as the guy that owned it turns out to be a friend of several of my snowmobile and dirtbike riding buddies. He seems to be a meticulous maintenance type. And best of all, I have a vacation coming up in 2 weeks which will give me lots of time to start honing some trials skills.
