2004 CR250r 2-stroke oil mix HELP

Hi there, I have just bought a 2004 model CR250r and I'm having a bit of a dilema with the 2-stroke oil mix. My problem is the HONDA owners Manual states a 20 -1 fuel to oil mix or a 32 - 1 mix if you stay in Canada, and the 2-stroke oil (silkolene pro-2 fully synthetic) says it can be mixed up to 50 - 1. I used to own a 1996 CR250 and I used a 40 - 1 fuel to oil mix and it was fine. Can anybody give me any advice please.

This is a much debated topic, some saying go with what the bike manufacturer recommends and some saying go with what the oil manufacturer recommends. Personally, I mix my fuel at 36:1 (Yamaha recommends 32:1 for my '01 yz 125). I use Bel Ray H1R, which recommends 50 :1. As you can see, I am in the middle of the spectrum, leaning a little more toward the recommended 32:1 ratio. This mixture works perfect for me. I also use a 50/50 mix of race fuel and 93 octane to keep the heat down a little.

Basically, the more oil you add to the fuel, the more viscous the mixture and the more protection your top end has.

Drewser, I run Motul synthetic at 44:1 in my 02 CR and have had no problems at all.

Contrary to popular belief, a rich or lean jetting condition doesn't have much to do with fuel mixture. In fact, more oil in the fuel mixture would tend to create a lean condition because the mixture is more viscous and doesn't flow through the carb as easily. Your bike should be jetted once you have established what fuel mixture you want to use.

So I think I should run a 32 - 1 mix to start with until it's broken in and see how it goes from there. Because i would rather run it with to much oil rather than too little as long as it doesnt eat the plugs.

I'd start at 32:1 and work your way toward less oil as neceassary. Lot's of people including myself run between 40 and 50 to 1 with no problems. It has alot to do with the type of riding you do.

Not sure what the ratio is off the top of my head, but I have always used 3 ounces for every gallon of gas in my 03 CR250 with no issues at all.

32:1 (or even more oil is ok) for me. I'm not going to try to say that less oil in the mix will cause immediate catastrophic failure, but common sense tells us that parts will wear out faster!

Keeping dirt out of the engine and running quality fuel plays more of a role in engine life than exact fuel ratio, just like jetting affects plug fouling more than fuel ratio.

It drives some folks nuts when they see me dumping oil and using the scale on the side of the container to measure. Does it really matter if I end up with 31:1 or 33:1? I doubt it.

1 quart in 4 gallons = 16:1 I believe. :) I run 1 bottle MX2T per 4 gallons, and MX2T comes in one pint, 16 ounce size...

I'm also using Motul synthetic in my 2003 CR250 at 60:1 and after 6 races show no signs of wear in my cylinder and my ring gap is identical to the day I brought it home. I also noticed during each tear down that the oil is actually still red inside the cylinder (as opposed to the usual burned up spooge). I've been very pleased. :thumb:

i have used golden spectro for years at 50-1 as advised by my engine builder,i have noticed lots of oil in the crank case upon many tear downs on many bikes over the years,i have never had an oil related problem or exsesive ware do to lack of oil.another interesting fact is that the more oil you add to your fuel the lower the octane----this is why i always recomend the stuff @50-1

I run my Bel Ray H1R at 36:1. But spark plug fouling is more a jetting issue than anything else.

Another vote for 32:1. I used to run higher...around 38:1 on my Rm250. I since went to 32:1 and my plug still looks great.

In all of my searching, I have discovered that generally 32:1 is good for 250's and 24:1 for 125's.

Ive had the bike about a month and a half now and have been mixing the fuel at 20-1 as spec-ed by Honda so far so go, the bike runs awsum and does'nt foul the plug or anything(still using original plug), the only thing I've noticed is the oil coming out the exhaust, Is this a problem???

I've got about 15 hours on my '04 CR250r and have been running 31:1 Golden Spectro from the begining, no complaints, plugs have been looking great.

Haven't noticed mine spitting any oil out the exhaust though, that doesn't sound to good.
