What is the rated horsepower of a 2002 380? Does the EXC put out less than an SX? I thought it was about 60 hp but I was drag racing an EXC on pavement today (barely rolling, clutch in,2nd gear)5 or 6 times, and it was pretty much a draw!!! I outweigh the other guy by 60lbs!The last time we raced we switched bikes and he went around me in 4th gear.(we race from almost a stop to top end) I have a 2001 WR 426 which is pretty much stock except for a YZ muffler and some slght jetting changes. I'd guess around 45 hp.He said his air filter was fairly clean and the spark plug wasn't very old. The jetting is factory and the bike seems to run fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? It's nice to have something to tease my buddy about but there has to be something not right with his bike.

i would guess about 55hp. The new 250SX makes 50hp. A highly tuned 380 would easily make over 60hp, but i doubt whether anyone could hang on, so the engineers designed the bike to have more useable power - at the expense of peak hp. The EXC will have less power as it has a heavier flywheel, and different powervalve setting, reed, muffler etc.

OK,that makes about 10 hp difference. He should have spanked me like a red-headed stepchild! 250's usually hang with me till they run out of gear so it's not that my bike is real fast. He raced a CR 500 at an actual drag strip and they ran 14.7-8 at 78-9 mph. Does this sound about right ?

I would be suprised if the 380 makes 50 hp. Your WR should not have any problem hanging with the 380. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. You really cant compare the 250 with the 380 and come up with the extra horeses just because it bigger. The 250 is a screamer where the 380 is more tractor like.

I own both a '02 KTM380exc and a '02WR426.

The KTM is faster almost everywhere, 426 hooks up better than 380 in really slick conditions.

426 geard down two teeth in rear still has higher top speed (almost 10mph)

IMHO, the 380 is a much better bike, except for fuel economy........

BUCKHOLZ,
That is more like I expected them to compare. What have you done to your WR to uncork it? eg.exhaust, airbox, jetting, etc.(He used to smoke me badly with WR muffler)

WR has ex insert removed, airbox cover removed, grey wire cut, throttle stop removed.

I jet both the bikes for my elevation ~7000', and rejet where-ever I go.
