Getting into vintage mx and have narrowed my choice to these two bikes. Same price and cond. Any pros/cons. Thanks in advance.

The '76 has the dual chamber air forks, which did not work very well IMO.

Suspension was improving pretty rapidly from '76 to '79, so if the bikes are competing in the same class, I think the '79 would have an advantage on the track.

Those typically run in two different classes, but not always. Either should be equally competitive within their respective class. If you're racing any age group classes in addition to "era" classes the 79 would likely be a better choice.

I would buy it based off the classes... in AHRMA they race 2 seperate classes... Historic(75-77) and the other class(can't remember the name!) 78-83/84(?)... I would not want to race a 79 against an 83/84... ALOT of difference(water cooled alone is a big change)...

I race Historic mx and cross country on a 77...

Historic 75-77
GP 78-81
Ultima 82-84
From memory roughly for most YZs.
Got beat pretty good by a GP class 250 while I was on my Ultima class 490 in the open age class. More than once!

The gp class for the YZ is watercooled('82?)... the only one allowed - I was suprised when a friend rode one. I rode Yamaha from 70-80 hence the reason for looking at the bike and what class you might ride in. One thing zoomx brought up and it's VERY true... a quicker rider will beat you regardless what you ride...

The '76 is essentially a '75 MX, and is much heavier than the '79.

The '79 has much better suspension and definately more power.
