Have an old 87 KX125 that runs fine but now I think the
shifter return spring has broken. Once in gear the
shifter does not return to neutral position to go to the next
gear! :ugg: How hard is this to fix? Can I do it or do I need
to take it in? Any temporary known fixes/rigging ?

Let me know..

sounds like the return spring to be. No it's not expensive or difficult to replace. You will need to remove the RH case, and remove the shift shaft. You may need to remove the clutch basket to remove the shift shaft, so you might need to obtain a clutch holder tool, but all the other bits are the usual seals, gaskets etc..plus the spring itself of course.

yep, thats what happened to my 96 yz125, its kinda difficult to do if u dont have the right tools, but it can be done, just dont put the shifter back on until you get the main clutch cover on. good luck :yeehaw:

If you have an electric impact makes it's pretty easy getting the bolt off, done it before without a clutch holding tool. Either get the motion pro universal clutch holder like $20 nice tool or make one using one friction and one drive plate bolted together but it doesn't make for a strong holding tool so use caution if you do that. I got an electric impact for like $40 worth while investnent.
