99 yz125 jet needle settings

I purchased a 99 yz125 this spring and am learning about 2 strokes. I changed my premix ratio from 40:1 to 30:1 after having eg rebuild the lower end and a new top end, so I am in the process of rejetting it. I believe I have the main about right and am now working on the jet needle setting. It misses at steady throttle but screams at wide open. It has good acceleration just misses at steady throttle. The book says that the needle should be in the fourth position. When I took out the needle the clip was in the 2nd from the top (out of five slots). I dropped it one position and it was better i think but still misses some. It doesn't miss at any other throttle position or speed, even wide open for several seconds so I think my float level is ok. So i have 2 questions, 1) is the needle clip setting counted from the top or bottom? and 2) am I on the right track in stopping the missing?

I have the same bike. Here are my jetting specs in TX:

Elevation 500', Temp 80-90deg
Main - 330 (350 stock)
Needle - 1st slot from top of needle (stock is 2nd from top)
Pilot - 50 (stock is 45) 1 turn out

Changes to the bike that have affected the jetting:
ProCircuit Pipe & Silencer
V Force 2

I have ridden the bike in 35-40 deg weather also and each jet went one richer.

Try the following 2 items to stop the missing.
1. Put in a smaller main jet.
2. Move the clip to the first pos from the top of the needle.

Don't do both at once, change them one at a time and see what happens. Your bike sounds rich.

Thanks billtx, i will try that. What ratio of premix are you using? I have the stock pipe and silencer and it was supposed to have new carbon reeds but I don't know what kind. So when the book says the fourth position it is counting from the bottom? Thanks again

wow! Going up on the needle clip really helped! I am hesitant to move the main because I went up one before posting the thread and it seems like it has more power than before? Should I go with a smaller needle jet instead?

Thanks

I use 32:1 Motul. On the needle, I think Position 4 is 4 up from the bottom. I can't say if you need another needle or not. I'm not totally comfortable with not having any more adjustability. Yamaha sells a couple more that are a notch or so leaner. I havn't purchased one yet but may get around to it.

The reeds can have an affect on jetting, that's for sure. If yours are not stock Yamaha you will see a difference.

Sounds like it is running well for you.
