It depends on the procedure the person follows that signed you up.
When My wife and I sell memberships at an event the paperwork is sent off on the first business day after the event via Express mail.
We tell everyone that it will take four to six weeks to recieve their card.
If you have not recieved yours within this time frame call 1-800-AMA Join with the number off your yellow receipt and they will track it down for you.
About 95% of the problem in late arriving memberships is it takes so long for them to translate handwritng

If you don't--Who will?
The AMA isn't the fastest org in the world. I recently renewed mine via the net for the rest of 2000-01 and it took several weeks to get my new card/pin/insurance flyers/car rental coupons/etc. Your wait is typical, especially for a track side sign-up.
On any given weekend there are hundreds of events going on where come Monday morning thousands of aplications start flooding into Ohio.
Try signing up at an event in early spring and see how long it takes--wheww!!!
If everyone would use the renewal forms in the mail sign up on Race day would be a whole lot easier
