Are there any indoor arenas in the Midwest that have open practice. I know there is one in Staples MN (motodome)--anyone ride there? what do you think of it? Its getting cold here in Minneapolis and I am having serious withdraws from riding my bike. Any help of info would be nice...i'm willing to drive anywhere to get some riding in.

I've been to Staples to race their outdoor track in the summer and seen the indoor track - I imagine it's pretty nice for riding in the winter. Might be a little cold though because it has a non-insulated tent-like roof. The building is a lot bigger than some of the other indoor tracks I've been to, though.

There is also IMX arena in Dubuque, IA (Northeast corner of IA, close to MN) which has been reopened this year called Farley Motorsports I believe. Last year they had a big race series but ran into money problems towards the end. The track was similar to an AX track with some more intermediate jumps and whoops. They had a website last year but I think that's gone now. Their phone number is 563-744-3535 and I believe they have both practice and races this winter.

Then there is WIR in Waterman, IL (north-central IL close to Rockford/DeKalb). Check out http://www.wir-mx.com/ for more details. The owner of http://www.jolietmx.com has had the materials for an indoor building for a year now, but isn't looking too good for it to get up and running by this winter.

And if you really want to drive - there is a new place near Fort Wayne, IN, and there is a place in Zeeland, MI, and Tecumseh, MI. Zeeland is nice and about the same size/layout as WIR in IL (which is like the size of 2 AX tracks). Tecumseh is small (like an AX) but has been in business for a bunch of years.

Nikki---I looked at the sites. WIR and Dubuque indoor are both about the same distance (6hrs)--which one is better (bigger/large jumps?)? Out of all the listed tracks--which one in your opinion is the best?

thanks again

I can only offer comment's about Waterman's
since we practice there in the winter.
They have toned the track down a little
with a couple of jumps either removed or
made into a tabletop kind of thing.
It is more of a mini(65 or 80cc) track in my opinion
and although it wasn't too busy last night and well
worth my drive (1.5hr) as far as fun goes It still
sucks to pay $30 a ride for what it is!!!
What a joke, how can you ride regularly
with the kids at $30 a person.

I live in St Paul... I dont track ride, but I might be up for a trip to somewhere warmer to trail ride... if you're interested in that?

I was in Moab Utah this fall and from what I can see you can ride there year around and it has the best trail network I have ever seen... (we can get there in one long ass days drive)

THEY say it gets cold as hell there in the winter so you can't ride (when I asked them to define "cold as hell", they indicated that it sometimes drops into the 40's.... lol is all a Minnesotan can say to that)

The big plus is that that is the 'off season' for them- not so many riders

Eric and I are going to try to check out the motoplex here in Indiana this weekend. It is about 15 miles from here. I have heard that its small but when its 10 below zero you can't be to picky :) It will be warm enough to ride outside for a while longer here but those cold winter days are closing in :(

I think that Iowa one looks interesting, and might be worth my checking into. It's also the closest, next to motodome. I am also starting to get the winter riding bug. Even though it was in the 50's yesterday and I was able to ride my MX track at home. I would be interested in meeting up with some of you guys for an indoor ride. I have been to Staples MX track, but have yet to see the motodome. It might be interesting, but I heard it's pretty tight, and it still gets cold. Dropping in to the 40's, lol, sheesh!!! If it's close to 50, plenty warm enough for riding.

There will be a arena cross style event in Brookings SD on the Friday and Saturday nights of Superrbowl weekend. Last year was a blast, small track but loads of fun
