i didnt have to modify the chain guard, it was close but it did work, :) and you should be fine going to a 12 on the front the only time i usually run into trouble is going to a bigger sprocket on the front like a 14 then it may rub the chain/crankcase guard.
do you have a manual that came with the bike? check in it for oil weights i just run Honda 10w-40 in my X. just try and change your oil every 5 rides or so depending on how hard you ride. and as for checking valve clearences, depending on your riding style, and how often you ride maybe once a year would be fine. i know the R takes more maintenance than the X due to higher revs and such, my X is almost 4 years old now and i haven't had to touch any internals, including valve clearance. :nod:
