At last...I've got High Speed Internet! (and a new job)

Well, at long last I stepped up the speed...on line that is. (off road is a lost cause).

Got hooked up with Satellite internet today. Cable, DSL or wireless was not an option where i live, that left the dish. Seems to work OK - not as fast as I had hoped it might be, but waaaay better than dial up! Along with this I will soon have a new email address -( have not set it up yet, but will soon.) So if anyone tries to email me at my old addy and gets a bounce back, PM me and I can send my new address.

In the spirit of changes, how about a new job. Started a couple weeks ago - spending your tax dollars as a state employee. What a nice benefits package. Downside is travel, but that will be OK. This summer I hope to bring the bike along on some jobs and will explore some trail systems I otherwise might never get on.

What job did you land? I've been tracking MI & Fed gov jobs while I'm deployed. Mostly around Muskegon. There doesen't seem to be many near my house. There was a sweet job that fits me at Sleeping Bear Dunes but it would mean a move. Good luck with the state!

Which service did you get, Mike? I've been looking at a few for a couple friends & seems like most sat providers are "full" already (like WildBlue). They are in the same N/S area or further north than you so it should be the same sats they would be hitting..

Yep latency going up to the Satellite and back down limits performance verses cable or dsl.

Uchytil - The job I got was with the Department of Community Health, Office of Audit. I work out of Grayling, but travel across Northern Lower, and Da UP. BTW - thanks for serving your country! Much appreciated!

Inca - yep, you are right. Ironically, what I had before "sounded like" a real position, but boy that sure was not real!

2TrakR - we went with hughes - look here: http://www.hughesnet.com We signed up online a week ago Sunday, got an phone call to schedule the next day, install was done this MOnday. So pretty quick turn around. We looked at WildBlue as well, but as you found out, no room at that inn. Also, appears they have some issues with reliability etc. from what I had read online. No clue if it is the same satellite or not though.

NewMike - thanks! I worked in Fairview through 11/2 - then took off a few days before starting the new job. I hope to get my email addy all set up soon (maybe tonight..certainly by Sunday), and will email you with the new addy then.

NoSoNewMike - Sure thing! Sorry I fell out of touch for a while...spent last week up in the UP on an audit, and been pretty busy when home. How is the baby doing?

bbarel - yeah, I read about the latency thing. Regardless, it is notably faster. Most notable if doing a download of something. Clickty clickty back and forth on web pages is when it seems you more notice the latency issue.

Thanks Curtis - how is Dandy Andy doing? I have some odds and ends for the Blaster I need to send to him.

Meterman - dont rub it in! As the crow flies, DSL is less than 1/2 mile from my house...but them good wires dont run down my driveway! Did you ever sell your 450?

:( Yep, sold the 450 :(

The wife is due Dec. 19th with our first kid, a girl. Sold the bike in the beginning of Oct. I should of waited a few more months though, just put new grips, chain, sprockets, S-12's, muffler packing and other goodies on it. 13-52 gearing WOW! I really miss her. :(

The guy who bought my bike said was he wanted to put a Carbon Fiber muffler on it, a loud one. :bang: :yikes:
I promptly informed him on the utmost importance of quiet bikes and the existence of FMF Q's and Leo Vince quiet pipes.

Looking at 08 or 09 300xcw.

p.s. this DSL does'nt come close to the cable internet I had

Mike, I'm glad the new job is working out. You should have a blast with it this summer.

Congrats on the satellite modem. I'll past the information on that to my dad in Grayling. He's tired of the phone modem too.

Nick - I almost stopped by the shop in Marquette today to say "hi" - I am up in Da UP der eh on that gov'mt job! I think they might make that weekend a state employee holiday if i ask really nice! If i can find a way to ride the Mini with my boys and ride the LM AND Help...sure I would help out. No straight tickets for me though! I call 'em as I see 'em...not red or blue.
