auto decompression?

Does anyone have any experience with auto decompression cables? Do i need to one on my 1986 xt350? I recently snapped the kick start shaft clean off in the case, and i dont know how. the timing is perfect and i practice the TDC method of starting. It just broke off. is it just old or did i do something wrong, thanks for input.

i pulled off the cover and found that the lever that pushes the valve down barely pushes it at all when the cable is pulled tight, does anyone know how i could adjust this?

ya need a service manual

i have a clymers manual, it barely touches on the subject. ive heard some guys say they have removed the whole thing and plugged the hole. i am not looking forward to another snapped kickstart shaft though.
