downshifting doesnt do much if anything on a 4t, or at least for me

It makes a big difference on 4 strokes. Which 4 stroke did it not make a difference for you?

kx250f, wasnt that big of a jump, like 3rd gear half throttle.

3rd gear half throttle on a 250F is a big jump. This is 70' or 80' at half throttle in 3rd gear:

That jump is 60' to clear and he usually lands at least 10' to 20' past that.
