My dad is having trouble with the Baja Designs dual sport kits on both of his 2002 XR250s. This spring he has tried to start them but is getting no spark. The only way he can get a spark is by charging up the batteries on the dual sport kit. Is this correct? Why would the dead battery have any effect on the coil/sparkplug? Is something connected wrong?

I dont have the kit but it may be normal if there is no isolation between the bike and the battery. You may want to put a simple switch in line with the battary and lights or simply find and pull the fuse to the kit while starting the bike. Lots of older street and enduro bikes will not kick start with a dead battery, even if you remove the battery, once the bike gets running you can remove the batterys unless you let the idel go to low with the lights on.

It almost does sound like the battery is in line with the ignition and hot (always on) which means when the battery has juice and you kick the bike over the spark is transferred through to the coil but when the battery is dead is just "absorbes" the power generated by the stator.
