That's funny how different peoples tastes are. I personally did not like the 98 kx at all ,had an odd dead spot in the lower mid-range which made woods riding a freaky affair here in the northwest(stall city).I loved my 94CR and my bro-inlaws 01 YZ.Both had smooth power and lots of it.

The 99 KX250 was a better woods bike than the 98 because of the engine. That power band seemed to be pretty good throughout most of it's RPM range and didn't have the HIT like the 98. I think the bike with the best all around package had to have been the 01 CR250. It's the best Honda 2 stroke ever made in my book.
A lot of 04 and 05 bikes are very nice but they always seem to have some little quirk. I would like to see how the 06's stack up this year. It's going to be very close. As far as most 04's and newer go though, pick your favorite color and go for it, their all excellent bikes.

any good years for RM250??

2003-2005; thats when they started the YZ clones.

i really liked my 1987 CR250- super smooth and wide power.

The 93' CR250 gets my vote....That bike sounded ferrocious...I rode a stock, and a 93' CR250 modded by Eric Gorr and the bike was almost too powerful...The best way to describe the powerband would be to call it thick....torquey with no need for clutch work....The motor was almost too much....I've ridden the 91', 93', 01', 03', and 04' CR250's and the 93' seems to stick out the most.

I have ridden a couple of bikes in the past years. I would have to say the 03-05 yz250 motor is the best. I'm still amazed by this powerplant. Next i would say the 01 Cr250 was pretty nice. I bought an 02 because I though Honda could only go forward with there design. The 02 motor wasn't bad but not nearly as good as the YZ. The 2000 kx had good bottm but it was the flatest motor on top I have ever rode.

Did Yamaha and Suzuki team up and share technology and parts like Kawi and Suzuki do (use to)??? or is suzuki just copying Yamaha??

My old 1994 Honda cr250 hit so hard, It would pull your arms out of your sockets. Seariously quick bike and thats comparing it to a 2002 yzf426 a 2002 Honda crf450 and a 2001 Yamaha yz250

they copied them. suzuki are smart, they copied the KTM engine for the 125, and the YZ engine for the 250.

apparently, the new KX250 is a YZ copy also. i think kawi copied the YZ125 for their recent KX125s.

You are right Bruce, if you can beat them, join them. The only difference is suzuki keeps updating there motors. I don't really know if they are better than the yz. I know the 02 isn't, that the only suzuki 250 I have ridden and it isn't the same as the new engines. Sooner or later I would really like to ride one and see. I have to give suzuki alot of credit the past few years, they really upped there game in both performance and more importantly reliablity. The only thing they don't have going for them is resale value and i think with there 450 they are changing that.

My 91' KX250's was one of my favorite motors. All torque. Bud's 94' Cr250 wasn't impressive to me but I was used to the torque of my 91'. His needed a lot of clutching and the snap wasn't there. My 01' RM250 with eric-gorr lowend port is impressive. More overev than stock and alot more torque. I had a 78' RM that would wax them all on the top end but it sucked everywhere else. 98'ATK260 motor sucked everywhere and wouldn't pull the skin off rice pudding.

After owning a '93 KX250, '00 CR250 and now an '05 KX250, the 05 is incredible. So much good usable power is hard to imagine improving! Obviously not quite as much outright horsepower as, say and 05 CRF450 but its just so much fun! kicks the ass of an '05 RM (in the words of my buddy who owns one!). :D

It is difficult to compare bikes from years past with present technology, but I would have to say the two best bikes I have ridden are 1988 RM250 and the 2005 YZ250.

The motor on the 1990 CR250 motor was awsome and probably would still rate highly today, but its chassis was not good at all.

Loved the 97 CR-250 Top end.
I reckon to choose a favorite I would have to agree as far as Honda the 01 Motor seems to be an all around fantastic motor.
If I had to choose a CR from 97-2004 it would be the 01.

Another vote for the '01 CR 250. When Honda builds a better 250cc 2-stroke I won't mind parting with this one. :ride:
