best mods for RM85

Can someone tell me what the best mod for a 2006 RM85L would be? I watched videos on youtube and it seems them RM85's are way faster.

Well, to start out, I'd put a performance aftermarket pipe and silencer on it. That will make a big power difference. Look into FMF and Pro Circuit exhausts for two strokes. I'm not really sure what good for MX bikes.

Also, remember to rejet after bolting on a new exhaust system or your bike will run like crap.

Typically the stock exhauses are pretty darn good. Wait to replace it until you smash the stocker because huge power gains don't exist in current bikes without huge $$ spent on huge modifications. Get the suspension setup for you and the conditions you ride in. Take riding lessons. Spend the money smart and you'll be faster than the average Joe that thinks bling makes you faster.

I agree with Patman the stock exhauses you not see must of a gine over the stock setup maybe 0 to 1 hosepower at best.

SHSPVR, it depends what you ride and what kind of pipe you get. The SST on a RM85 will give you 3HP more on top but will kill what little power you have in the bottom end.

That was just an Example 2 strokes for life of me I can't see why any would want spent $300+ just to gain a few more hosepower over stock.
For an real gain in hosepower they need spent on huge money.
Like for Example CR80/5 engine pumping out 34HP which is fully blueprinted and cost something like $2000 if I recall.

There is no way a heavy mod 80 or 85 could make 34 hp even if it ran on U2. If money is no object send it to R&D. Thats who does Eli Tomacs bikes. Or foreward motion run by the dirtbike god himself Mr. Eric Gorr. Either one should be sufficient

once the stock clutch basket goes replace it with a Hinson unit there harder and teflon coated.

I agree with Patman. I'll also say that if there was a pipe worth 3 horsepower on an 85 I would be all over it. That sounds like a magazine number, not a dyno number. Just spent a day at the track testing pipes back to back on a YZ 85. Stock vs. FMF SST vs. R&D hand built $400 cone pipe. The boy was fastest with the stock pipe. The best power bang for the buck on an RM is going to come from a V-Force 3 and proper jetting. Suspension tuning is going to make the biggest difference on the track.

What I found to be the best bang for the buck when come aftermarket pipe is DG Performance R-Series Mx Pipe with R-Series Mx Silencer which can usedly get for less then $100/150 for both new which can be gotting off **** and if you are really really lucky some time a good uesd FMF Gold Series Fatty Pipe or Pro Circuit and match Silencer cheap there to.

Suspension, mx classes, big bore with forward motion porting and head work, pro seal filter, ignition, wiseco basket with hinson hubs, pro wheels with talon hubs, sst pipe and silencer and ether race gas. If he does not want to ride it, I know a kid!

Best money spent is on suspension. Won't make the bike go faster but will allow you to ride faster. if you cannot ride it to the limits without the mods then you surely won't be able to ride it with the mods. I've done lap times on tons of kids and they are slower with a mod motor for a LONG time. Looking at Loretta Lynn race times the kids are about 2 seconds a lap faster on their full tilt mod bikes vs a stock bike. Considering the size of the track that is not that much.
Second best money spent? Track time and more track time. and then more track time.
Third best. Training schools or individual lessons. Some of the schools are way expensive for what you learn. I have found I can get a fast 85 rider to work with my kid all day for $20 and he's happy as a clam to do it. Also fast local pro's work cheaper than the class guys. I've found several top local pro's that are at $50/hr. No need for a $600 class with 20 other guys until you already goin pretty good IMO...

Using the methods above my 7 year old 50 rider beats most of the weekend warrior big bike riders at our local tracks. And would most likely school most of the You Tube hooligans. I have a hell of a time keeping up with him in corners on a 250. I cannot even think of keeping up with my 11 year old 85 rider.

Now if you do decide to mod a motor I have experience with Eric Gorr. His motor flat rips. He has drop on Supermini 100cc cylinders for about $425. We holeshotted a modded out 150r uphill in sand this last weekend. Thats a chore big time but we did it by about 1 bike length. That was with our Eric Gorr ported 92cc jr supermini cylinder.

Dean at R&D has a killer powervalve mod that gives 1.5hp down low. Does nothing up top good or bad but seriously helps down low. Maybe combine with the PC pipe and your set..? But cost...$200 for a little cover and spring.

Just a lot of reading here...

Quick story. A while back we sponsored a rider that won several national titles including Loretta Lynns. We dropped a mod cylinder on his bike and pumped it up from 50cc's to 60cc's. Immediatley he was 4 seconds a lap SLOWER. It took several months of practice until he had the same lap times.
Its the same reason my older son has a 92cc supermini instead of a 112cc supermini. He's faster with les HP because he can get on the gas sooner and it has a better powerband to fit his style of riding.
Now where you see the difference in mod motors is on the start and in sandy type tracks. Thats why I was so Impressed with Erics Cylinder. I had the 92cc cylinder before but when it broke a ring I decided to have EG do some portwork while getting it fixed. When I saw the cylinder I thought "wow I wonder if he forgot to do this one" Under close inspection I could see very light port work on the boost port and it looked like he evened the other ports up a bit. Also he modded the head. Then I dropped it on and really noticed the difference immediatley. No he didn't forget that one!

Jasle, what kind of fuel are you running? Running anything but firepower is a circle jerk! You need ether! http://www.precisionautoresearch.com/page2.html, For the best throttle response, anti freeze and oils, call Dave! And if you can afford the data acquisitions, wow! i know a guy with a promising rider and he is quagmired in track dads and talk, Eric's mods to my knowledge are one of a kind, nothing off the seat of his pants, there is a science to the motor after all!

for the most part i run premium pump gas all year except nationals. I don't have room in the budget for race fuels. At nationals I'll spring for C12 for the stock bikes and U2 for the mods. Sorta suks to have to rejet...but then I'd be fiddling with jetting anyway at those races to ensure I'm spot on.
i found the precisionauto link a while ago in the adv tech a while ago but have not acted on it.

Alcohol blows, Dave at Precision will ship anywhere in the US of A, and is available in other countries also! If you demand razor sharp throttle response, and ease of jetting, you need ether! 537, Xamax trans and mix, the boost for the fuel, and race kool dilutes with water and has a leak detector in it! The 4t fuels are pretty awesome also. Now if you had a couple grand to dump on the data collections systems,wow!!! Legal to use in amateur events, not pro.
