There have been some downhill big wheel races at the Tail of the Dragon (by guys with full leathers). Apparently the hot setup is to put bearings in because the plastic melts "at speed".

That Tail of Dragon road is WICKED...I've ridden up and down it on both mountain bikes and road bikes...I can't imagine trying to do it on a bigwheel...full leathers and a REAL helmet would be a must. :)
