Hey Guys,

I took my girlfriend out to a track me and my friend are building the other day, and she said she wanted to ride the bike. Knowing she has never ridden one, I was a little hesitant. Since the bike is an xr250 and she is not big at all, I sat on the back and taught her how to work everything (clutch, gears etc.) After a couple trys she got it.

Now she tells me she wants to start riding. Since tax money is coming back soon and im getting plenty I thought I might buy her a bike.

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Honda CRF100 or a KX85, is this too small? or big? What bike do you think I should get for her.

Note that my girlfriend is 5'4" and weighs aproximately 115 lbs.

Thank you!

Yeah I think you're on the right track, with a smaller four-stroke like a CRF100F/150F or TTR125, or an 80/85cc or 100/105cc two-stroke. Any of those should fit her well at 5'4" for a beginner. If you have a shop nearby, maybe take her to sit on some bikes and see what she thinks. The four-strokes would be a little more mellow and better for trail riding, the two-strokes would have a little more power and hit, and better suspension/brakes.

I was also thinking about getting her a 2004 honda crf230 from my friend, would this be too powerful?

The power would probably be fine, but the CRF230 is a HEAVY TANK! I rode one in the woods once, and yuck! At 250 lbs., it weighs more than all of the 450 four-stroke MX bikes! I think it would be a very very bad idea for a first bike for a 5'4"/115 lb. female rider! But if it's a friend's bike, maybe have her try it out and see what she thinks. But I still think it's a bad choice for a first bike.

Just be aware the she'll probly spank you down the straight-aways on a 100/105, maybe even an 85 once she masters the clutch. My wife rides a ttr125 and she's a bit bored of the power. She has 1 full season on it. We are kinda kickin around the idea of selling the ttr in the spring for an 85/100/105. She was drooling like crazy at the KTM dealer when she saw the 105. It was a traumatic experience for me as my twin boys were sitting on the 50s and we went there to look at the 200 for me! The guy was stoked though, he was pushing me to take em all home, lol. Ahhh, what's 10 or 12 grand?

My wife putts around on our hot rod XR95 just fine. Of course she's a bit smaller at 5'0" on a good day but I think the most important part is the sparkley pink helmet!
