I am a beginner to this sport and have purchased a 96 KLX 650. I think it is too much bike for me(not weight wise but speed wise). In first gear you have to be going about 10 to 15 miles per hour or you stall out. Does anyone know of any type of modification I can have done, short of buying a new bike, that would make this bike more manageable at low speeds? I need to slow this thing down. Help!

Absolutely. One tooth off the front sprocket is equivalent to several on of the rear and can have a big effect on rpms at low speeds. The front steel sprocket from an aftermarket supplier like rockymountain is very cheap too.

I am a short/light guy and have no problem with my current xr400 or my past xr500. The engine is not too big, the gearing is too tall. You can adjust the gearing with the sprockets.

Do realize that the top speed will be lower when you lower the gearing.
