It will expand the cases enough to release the grip on the bearing and make it easier to remove the bearing. When you install the new bearing, you should heat the case until you can sizzle a drop of water on the case. Freeze the bearing and it will drop right in the case. Keep in mind that the aluminum will melt at a little over 1100 degrees. If you are a tig welder, you can also weld a bead around the inside of the outer bearing race.
