I broke my clavical a few years back. Are you sure its really broken? I could feel the break thru my skin. The mayo clinic said the bones would "fuse" back together themselves and that no sergery was neccesary.  I had a second opinion at a sports fracture clinic and they said I should have it pinned or its going to look pretty bad when it heals. I decided to have it pinned. Ha anyone else been thru this? Mark

Clavical means collarbone, right? If so, I've broken my right one twice... ouch! The first time was in a dirtbike crash about 16 years ago on my '76 XL 125 and I think I was riding again in about 6 weeks or so. I remember that I wasn't quite 100% at that time and should have waited a little longer but hey, I was only 14.

It usually takes 8 weeks for a normal heal.  It may be more depending on the severity of the break, your age, your bodies healing rate and your habits.  I broke mine in two places and it took me almost 6 months to be able to ride again.  The bone now is humongo and limits flexibility.  The doctor said to keep a good diet and don't smoke.  I bet you could do some research on it through a medical internet site and get some other ideas.  Good luck

About 2 years ago I went to the hospital because of severe shoulder pain after mis-landing a jump.  I just wanted to know if it was broken to determine if I could keep riding.  A little pain never hurt anyone.  No x-rays form the doctors in the emergency room, they said it was fine after twisting the heck out of my arm.  Over the next 3-4 months it was pretty sore -- could not sleep on the right side (to this day).  Then I broke my foot.  Went to a bone doctor for this one.  While I was there I mention that the shoulder was still sore.  He put 20lbs in may hand and took and x-ray.

He said the good news is "your should is healed".  Bad news is you must have broke your clavical.  It healed itself, but it was off a smidge (according to the doctor).  All this healing while I was still racing and riding.  The initial impact crushed the the joint surface between the collar bone and the clavical.  It still huts after 2 years.  Doctor said he could fix it by cutting about 10mm off of the collar bone.  This way it will not rub the joint.  I have not found the time to get this done.  Maybe this winter.

My advice to you is to let it heal completely and make sure nothing else is wrong.

Good luck.  Go to a specialist.

CR Dave...I had something very similiar they called it an impingement had surgery to grind off some of the bone.Beware they can take to much off the bone they did mine and guess what?I went to have it exrayed after surgery and it had re-cracked I just said forget it and about 10 months later I had an mri done on it and it had healed back perfectly.Let me tell you one thing that shoulder is sooooo sore after surgery and it takes a few days to lift your arm up any, to all you guys facing shoulder surgery or injury good luck and don't push it to hard.

I had a bad crash last september, and broke my femur(ouch). But I also seperated my collar bone where it attaches to the shoulder,so now my shoulder just drops down. I am wondering if I will be able to race again with it like it is. My leg is not healed yet, so I haven't been able to try it out. the collar bone is just floating around in there.

    Hey folks
I broke my collarbone a couple of years ago, it kinda splintered after I went down hard on my kdx. I was 31 and it was the first time I had broken a bone. You should definetly let it heal a couple of months before any agressive riding or you will end up like an 18 year old coworker of mine.
He endo'ed his yz490 and busted his clavical, rode a few weeks later and hurt it again. He now has what looks like a big knot for a collarbone!!!
Oh yea, 9 months after I broke mine , I broke the tibia bone in my leg.     What luck

I broke mine in June.  I was riding easy again in 9 weeks and was able to ride hard in 4 months.  I still can not sleep on that side but everything seems to be OK.  Just don't push it and give your shoulder plenty of time to heal.

Sorry to hear of your injury.

Broke mine two years ago this Oct. (luckily I was dating a nurse at the time, sponge baths can be great spirit lifters!) rode the bike again a week after the accident (just around the block, I couldn't let it beat me) felt I could ride hard again about two months later but like Wheateater, I could not sleep on it for about 6-8 months. I'm really just now feeling like I have full strength back, but I think my range of motion is about 15% less than before.

Give it time and good luck!

Want to talk about it... well last august a broke the left one including 2 ribs and I went back riding in november and I remember that vibration was painfull. On second ride I feel again.. and guess what... I broke the right one and in both occasion doctor said that it will heal naturaly no operation required (???) and at some point I can still feel some pain in both shoulders, I think that the best solution will be to traine hard enough to build up lots of muscle to get more endurance.

I broke mine 6 weeks ago.  Broke it pretty close to the center and the two pieces are now overlapping about an inch and a half.  They said that was fine.  At 5 weeks the Dr. said I could go back to riding my "bike", but not to crash.  (My CR is a mountain bike, by the way)

I rode at exactly 5 weeks and it was a little sore if I over or under jumped any doubles.  Rode again this past weekend at 6 weeks (at the Suthin Spodefest) and it felt fine.  I only had 2 minor crashes (one on tape) with no further damage.  The ribs I broke were more of a hindrance than the collarbone, but there's nothing that can be done about those.

I have separated my shoulders before and *that* took much longer to heal.  One of them was sore for over a year.
