Broken Shift Shaft

My buddy hit a tree real good yesterday with his '95 KDX200 and snapped the shiter shaft off flush with the cases. I never had one of these apart before, is this replacable without splitting the cases, or does the entire shaft assembly reside within the transmission? Thanks.

You should not have to split the cases to change the shift shaft.

It slides in from the clutch side, just pull the clutch-side engine cover off. You don't have to split the center cases.
