I have a 2000 KTM 380EXC and a gnarly FMF pipe. I pulled the plug yesterday and the plug is black so I assume to much gass what steps should I take to fix the prob?
To truly 'dial' a KTM jetting takes trial and error. The #7 slide works very well in Reno. Another option is to have NMS shave the stock slide. They get it real close to a #7.
Having said the above, my old 380 ('99) jetting is as follows:
45p
170m
shaved #6 slide
1369NS needle (#3)
a/s 1 3/4 turns
50/50 race/pump gas
If you don't want to put a lot of time and effort into it right away, start by lowering the needle one clip position at a time to see how this affects performance.
so the 170m goes in the bottom after taking the nut off the carb... then the needle is that actually attached to the throttle cable? and then the 45p do I take off the bottom of the cab where the float is to replace that?
I have had both pro circuit platinum and fmf gnarly on KTMs. There is not a lot of performance gain over the stock pipe, IMO. The Gnarly is so beefy that it much harder to ding.
The way I understand it is with Fmf fatty & core2 change, you need less fuel: smaller pilot, main, raise needle clip position, or maybe #7 slide. I'll now refer you to the experts.............
I live in lake havasu City Az which is a little lower elevation but higher temperatures. I have spent alot of time with the jetting on this bike and this is what works for me. A 178 main, #7 slide, CEK #3, 40 pilot, and the air screw at 1.5 out. This works great, and my plugs are a perfect tan color.
