we use this stuff to cover ladles full of molten metal called cerawool. it looks and feels exactly like silencer packing. it seems to have the same density, tensile strength, weight, everything except the fact that it comes in 25' lengths at 36" wide. question is what could it hurt to cut a piece and try it as silencer packing. heres a link and a pic to check out.

for him I bet it would be free, at that price it couldn't hurt to give it a go.

I use frost king and get about 4 repacks for $4

Is this the "thing" with packing? Just like tranny oil, just change it often? The crap that fmf sells is cheap, like most oils. Over a year it can get pricey, in a pinch? As long as it does not catch fire, or blow asbestos out the back, what the heck? I believe the word is resonance. I know the correct sound, and the throttle response matches. I could really use a strip of that stuff to keep my plastic tank from melting on my 480! It looks like the same stuff I use to sweat copper and not burn houses down. And its really expensive!
