change needle = how many positions?

I have a 1371D needle now and am using the top clip position but the bike is still rich. So if I go to the next leaner needle (I am assuming this is the next higher number) what clip position should I use? For example, is the middle clip position on a 1372 somewhat equal to the top position on a 1371? I just need a baseline to start out from.

When changing needles, I usually start in the middle clip and work from there. I don't know if that is the correct way, but it has served me well.

If you get a 1372d the 2nd clip from the top will be equal to the 1371d on the top clip.
So the 1372d on the top will be one clip leaner than the 1371d top.
