After a ride, you can wash the chain with a brush and soap/water just like you do the rest of the bike, then I wipe my chain down with a rag soaked with WD40, this displaces any water left on the chain and leave you with a chain that is "clean enough". Then lube with your choice of lube, and when that sets up, wipe it off again with a rag and WD40 - this last step simply removes excess lube that would end up flinging off and sticking where you don't want it. Don't pressure wash your chain, that will force dirt into the rollers. You can destroy a chain trying to get it too clean!
