clutch freeplay changes during riding

i have a 96 cr 250.the problem that i am having is that after about 15 min. of riding the freeplay on my clutch goes from an 1/8 inch to about 1/4 plus.
i dont understand how a c class rider can go through a clutch in a year.
do you think its shot?
any help or ideas would be great.

Are your springs good? You will be toasting plates left and right if they are sacked out.
