What psi numbers should I be getting from my 250? I mean, what is the general rule of thumb, like when to replace rings/piston, when it gets below what psi? Thanks.
I think you should be good between the 180-210 range. Keep in mind this will vary for a cold/warm bike. If you are below 150, I'd say it's time for rings if not a whole top end.
The best thing to do is to take a reading after installing a fresh topend and record that number. That way you can monitor top end wear. Try to take the reading under the same conditions, to remove any variables.
2-stroke 250's have 2 rings on the piston and can make it so you have good looking compression even when one ring is worn. My dealer who races told me that I had this problem after it happened, and eventually the piston slapped from only being supported from one ring, and dead engine. If I was you, I would take off the head pipe and have a look at the rings on your piston, just shine a flash light in there to see if they are worn.
89KX250 is right, removing your pipe can allow a quick visual inspection of the exhaust side of your piston with out removing the top end. You should be able to get your fingers on the skirt and feel for movement.
