CR/XR Shock Swap?

Does anyone know if you can throw a CR shock in an XR? A buddy of mine's nephew blew out his XR shock and he'd like to upgrade if he can. If no one knows, do you know the length of a CR shock?

it can probably be done, but a little more info, such as the year and engine size of the bikes in question, would make advice easier to give.

Oh, right (geez - brain fart)... it's a 1998 XR250...
