crankshaft oil seals

My 2000 KDX220 is burning gearbox oil and it's happening faster and faster. Ireckon I need to change the crankshaft oil seals, but before I rip the motor out does anyone know whether it can be done in the frame, and do the crankcases have to be split to change them?

from what ive read on here they need to be split to replace em.adam

just did mine. yes you have to split the engine. its a big task but it will last a long time once your done. It's hard to do without damaging the main bearings too so you may want to buy a kit with bearings and seals. Inspect the rod really well too because this is a good time to consider replacing it if it isn't in good shape. same with rings.. one thing leads to another but it will be great once your done.
