Just went to KTM's website and saw this. Thought I should tell you guys about it.

IMPORTANT TECHNICAL UPDATE FROM KTM
Amherst, OH, 26.August 2002

ATTENTION ALL KTM DEALERS AND OWNERS OF POTENTIALLY AFFECTED MODELS

LOWER TRIPLE CLAMP INSPECTION PROGRAM: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

KTM notified our dealers and customers of a potential problem with the lower triple clamp on certain KTM motorcycles. After careful review and examination the following is a list of motorcycles that we have determined to be affected with a technical flaw in the lower triple clamp.

MODELS AFFECTED: 2003 200 EXC/MXC, 2003 250 EXC, 2003 250 EXC Racing, 2003 300 EXC/MXC, 2003 450 EXC/MXC Racing, 2003 525 EXC/MXC Racing and 525 SX Racing.

KTM Sportminicycles, KTM 125 SX and KTM LC4 models ARE NOT AFFECTED.

While it has been determined that the actual number of flawed triple clamps is quite small, we cannot determine their identity through the VIN numbers with the high degree of accuracy necessary to ensure the safety and security of our customers.

Until you have the lower triple clamp of any affected 2003 models tested and thoroughly inspected by KTM USA:

Do NOT permit anyone to ride any of these motorcycles.

Do NOT sell or deliver these motorcycles to any customers.

Please contact any customer or other person who has taken delivery of one of these motorcycles and inform them to NOT ride the motorcycle.

Failure to have the lower triple clamp of any affected 2003 models tested and thoroughly inspected by KTM USA before operation of the motorcycle may result in serious injury or even death.

To ensure the safety and security of our customers, we have decided to send replacement lower triple clamp assemblies to your dealership for each registered owner (includes all registrations received by KTM USA as of August 22nd) of the affected 2003 models.

For all units not registered as of August 22nd which would include units with registrations in transit, units retail sold and not yet registered, remaining units in stock, and any units currently in transit to dealerships, THE DEALER MUST REMOVE and RETURN the lower triple clamp assembly to us (KTM Sportmotorcycle USA, Inc. Amherst, Ohio) IMMEDIATELY.

Immediately upon receiving the lower triple clamp assemblies from your dealership, we will return, the same day, via UPS Blue/Fed Exp Standard Air, lower triple clamp assemblies that have been tested and thoroughly inspected and found to be free of any manufacturing flaws.

All units shipped from our stock beginning Monday, August 26th, will have lower triple clamps mounted that have also been tested and thoroughly inspected and found to be free of manufacturing flaws.

In this exchange program all lower triple clamps returned to the dealership will be clearly marked with the VIN number of the machine that it is to be mounted on. It is imperative, for proper record keeping purposes, to match the correct triple clamp to the correct motorcycle.

Detailed technical instructions on how to change the lower triple clamps, along with procedures for shipping and warranty reimbursement were sent to your dealership on Friday, August 23rd 2002.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter, and for your patience while we are working to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

Good Post! Many dealers are still using the vin number list as the definitive list. It is not. KTM USA is instructing dealers to remove and return the clamps from all bikes not registered with them before 8-22-02 for their inspection. As of Saturday a large Seattle area dealer was still selling affected bikes based on a vin number inspection alone, which KTM now indicates is non conclusive!
