did the cr250 motor change from 92-01

I recently picked up a 1996 cr250 and I'm trying to set it up the same as my '01 cr250, BUT the stock gearing on the '96 is 13t/49 where the '01 is 14t/49t.

Did the cr250 motor change from '92-01? I know they look the same, and they use the same topend parts + gaskets ... but is the motor exactly the same? Did the tranny change at all? Will the '96 pull me around the same as the '01 if both bikes are tuned about the same, with the same sprocket setup?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Things that evolved throughout the years were porting, pipes, carbs, ignitions, pistons, etc... Those can make a big difference in how the motor runts, but the engine is the same basic design. I think you can swap cylinders between any of those years, but you might need to figure out what piston and head would work best if you are mixing cylinders and bottom ends.

Maybe get your '96 ported to '01 specs or put on '01 cylinder on the '96.

I'm surprised the '01 has a 14 tooth counter shaft. I know that rear sprockets can vary depending on year, but I thought they all had 13t on the front sprocket.

checked the specs yesterday and you're right

The '96 was previously a trail bike so it actually came with a 12t front on it, so compared to my '01 it was like riding a 125. I picked up a 13t front sprocket yesterday, so I'll mount it and go riding later today. It should be a lot better.
