Hey there!

As far as I know, the 220 was introduced in 97. It shares the same bottom end as the 95+ kdx200. KDX's from 89-94 are E series, no 220 available in this time. You'll need to find out for sure what years the engines you are getting are, and then go from there.

I have seen a couple references lately to early 90's KDX220's, so I hope I am not steering you wrong. I have always been under the impression that the KDX220 was not released until 1997 though. Check out the KDX timeline on the justkdx homepage for some more info.

As far as major differences, displacement is the only huge thing. The 220 has some torque over the 200, and of course the 200 has better top end rev.

Check on the years to be sure. In the USA, the 1989 - 1994 KDX200's are different than the 1995 - 2006 KDX200 / 1997 - 2005 KDX220R. In other countries, the KDX220R was available in 1995 at least. I am not sure which year was the first for it. It was not released in the USA until 1997.

You might want to get the VINs and engine numbers to be more certain about interchangeability.

That explains a lot! This still leaves it quite unlikely that any 220's were built on the 89-94 design, correct?

I think they are all perimeter frame based. (not based on USA E models)

I think the 1994 KDX220-A1 and KDX220-B1 were the first ones. No, not available in the US of A. :-)
