does anyone know if there is a list of bikes that qualify for a green sticker . i was under the impression that all 4 strokes would fit the bill. Now i have been told its not that simple , would love to by a new kx 450 , but may need to wait for the klx to be released , can anyone clear this up. :uh:

Are you in Kalifornikation? There are lots of threads covering this subject. Many members from Kali have better info. They will likely chime in.

There may be exceptions that I haven't thought of, but it basically goes as follows -

None of the new MX four strokes are green sticky, but most of the newer offroad four strokes are green (CRFX,WRF, KTM offroad four strokes, etc.)

All 2002 and earlier models are green sticker (2 strokes and four strokes).

This is the word for word criteria that is used to determine which models will be green sticker and which will be red. If you are unsure check the VIN number and specifically the character or figure in the 8th position. Essentially all of the competition models are going to be red sticker regardless of whether or not they are 4T or 2T. A KX450F will be issued a RED sticker.

"Red stickers are issued to 2003 year model and newer OHVs that are not certified to California OHV emission standards. If your OHV has a "3" or "C" in the eighth position of the vehicle identification number (VIN) then your vehicle will be issued a red sticker. Red stickers are issued to OHVs that can use California OHV riding areas for seasonal use only."

My friend's 2004 WR250F is a red sticker bike.

I believe it was with 2005 when the WR450 got it's green sticker...that was also the year Yamaha added the AIS to the bike. I know for sure the 2006 is green sticker compliant.

Unless the bike is a pre 2002 model. If it is 2002 or older it is grandfathered in and can be issued a green sticker or dual sported regardless of the "3" or "C" in the vin #.

Some of the new KTM's are green sticker legal and the new WR's are supposed to get a green sticker.

Exactly. The quote I posted is directly from the CA DMV website but I could see that being somewhat confusing the way they have it written, but it only applies to 2003 model year and newer as the first sentence states. 2002 and older are grandfathered as you said.

heres the low down )im a californian and work at a dealership)
any bike 2002 and older = Green Sticker
Any 2 stroke and race 4 stroke 2003 to present = red sticker (this includes YZ Yz250f Yz 450f, CRF 250r Crf 450rs, RMZ250 ect ect ect)

BUT! 2007 WR250fs WR450fs, and all(came out in 04) CRF250X CRF450X's are Green sticker bikes! (they meet EPA standards, have smog pumps on them and a big leaner jetting (all stuff you can fix and re jet ect)
