Tigger is driving me nuts to get her one of those electric scooters, the kind with a seat. Anyone have any experience with them? What to look for and what to stay away from?
Next door neighbors kid got one for about $200, looks like a mini-cycle with electric motor - I say, just go git a lil rascal, and it will give her years of service - right til she's 90 :p :)
Another cool thing I saw at my local bicycle shop is the electric motor kit for a normal bicycle, now that makes more sense to me !
How about getting an electric bike made by a motorcycle manufacturer - this looks way cool http://www.apriliaenjoy.com/ - think they may have been looking at the denali !
I think Bodge got it right the first time, lol. But i did see an article in CycleWorld on an awesome scooter called the Big Boy V-6. It doesnt have a seat, but it does have a twistgrip throttle, 5 inches of suspension travel on the preload adjustable shock and the front forks, a "ported and polished" 52cc single cylinder two-stroke engine, a heat treated aluminum frame thats anodized in 3 colors, hieght adjustable motocross style handle bars seated in aluminun triple clamps, 10 inches of ground clearance, disc brakes, and 14 inch bridgestone tires. You can check it out at www.bigboyscooters.com, never mind about the no-seat thing. They DO make a scooter with a seat. Same features too i think.
The speed and range on electrics is still on the low side. Most have less than a 20 mile range at around 15 MPH top speed. I think Apprilla was supposed to be selling a Hydrogen fuel cell powered bike soon. 03 or 04.
My brother has an electric on that works ok but dosnt go far at all. The thing i hate about it is working on it. The take the tire off u have to take the entire scooter apart! My friend also bought a gas powered on that was the worst waste of $700 i have ever seen in my life. If you decide to get your kid one look for a chain driven one.
My brother has a gas powered scooter. The thing goes pretty good. My mom and dad found that at a flea market. A few other neighborhood kids "copied" him, but theirs are electric and definitely aren't as quick as his. He paid $200 for his. I can't remember the brand of it. I'll have to ask him, and I can't remember how far he can go on a tank of gas, or how fast it goes.
It is definitely cold blooded though. It is a two-stroke and my CR doesn't like cold weather either....
That thing is kind of neat though, it even has a "storage box" attached to the back of the seat. He seems to enjoy it...whatever floats his boat. He's only 14, so it's the closest he can get to being able to have a "motorized" vehicle.
The new Texas law provides that electric scooters and gas scooters with engines less than 40cc may be ridden on public thoroughfares provided that the speed limit does not exceed 35 mph. No license is required but the scooters must follow the same regulations as those that apply to bicycles. Counties and municipalities are allowed to pass there own regulations.
The guy I work with bought one of these http://www.tvhaseverything.com/es049.html He says it moves along pretty good. It has 350 watts and a 36volt battery that gives it decent power. The smaller wattage and voltage scooters just don't have much power.
He said that there were some thing ha had to do to make it less "cheap". The rear brake cable was lame so he put on a new one. Also the nuts and bolts keep coming loose. He actually lost the rear suspension when the bolt that holds it together fell off. Use lots of loctite on everything.
