Replacing some of mine.

The excel set I got from a local shop says they are for any rim with 8.5mm holes.

That's not kawi. They're 7.5mm. The shop guy says to just drill 'em to fit. That's what excel told him when he asked, he said.

??

That doesn't seem completely reasonable to me. The nipple hole isn't stepped for a particular nipple size, but it is radiused.

Anyone with an opinion one way or the other regarding drilling of rims to fit aftermarket nipples?

The excel set was about $2 a spoke/nipple. Kawi is closer to $10. That gets spendy if you're replacing anything over a couple.

Enlarging the holes 1mm shouldn't cause a problem. Personally, I would use a hand reamer instead of a drill... and the cost of a new Excel rim is not much more than a quality reamer.

Yeah go with the Buchanon spoke and nipple set. If you just keep what you have you can slightly ream the holes with no side effects. I did this once on my old 94 KX. The buchanon set fit with my stock rim and also my 18" excel rim.
