Yamaha Rider Tim Ferry Set To Race Salt Lake SX
Despite Epstein-Barr virus, Ferry says he’ll re-join team Yamaha for the remaining two supercross races & teammate Chad Reed’s run at the title
FLORENCE, Ky. (April 23, 2003) – Team Yamaha’s Tim Ferry announced today he plans on returning to the THQ Supercross Series beginning this weekend at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Ferry, who hasn’t raced since Daytona (March 8th), was diagnosed with the energy-tapping Epstein-Barr virus immediately following the Daytona race. At the advice of his physicians, including MX industry medical specialist Jeff Spencer, Ferry took the better part of a month off before getting back on this bike the weekend of April 12th.
And he (Ferry) says, that despite not feeling 100-percent, he’s going to give it a go at Salt Lake City and Las Vegas before heading to Glen Helen (San Bernardino, Calif.) for the opening round of the Outdoor National Series.
“I was heading out west for the outdoors, so I figured I might as well race anyway,” said Ferry. “Figured it’s good way to get back into shape. Bikes are up and ready to go. I can finish up the supercross season, get a few more points and get ready for the Nationals.”
Also noteworthy is the fact that, despite missing the last four races, Ferry still sits comfortably in fourth place in the 250cc THQ World Supercross GP Series standings - just nine points behind fellow Yamaha competitor Heath Voss (3rd) and easily within striking distance of sidelined teammate David Vuillemin (2nd).
Ferry says he’s been “riding pretty much every other day, trying not to overdo it.” His doctors told him to rest, and rest he did, sleeping for as much as 12 to 15 hours a night for the past month and a half. One of the more fit riders on the tour, Ferry, the runner-up for the overall 250cc class Outdoor National Championship last summer, transitioned back into his once grueling fitness regime by doing some light mountain biking with friend, former motocross great Ron Tichenor and sticking to a well-disciplined diet.
When asked if Yamaha put any pressure on him to return (partly because Ferry could lend support to Reed’s chase for the title), Ferry said “Not at all.”
“I’m definitely excited to be back,” said Ferry. “But all along Yamaha was saying they’d love to have me back, but the decision was entirely up to me. I gave it a lot of thought and felt I was strong enough to race and that I wouldn’t be doing anything to jeopardize myself for the Nationals.”
Ferry's excited about the opportunity to put some more Yamaha blue up front. “Chad’s got a shot at it, definitely. But, I’m just going out there for myself and don’t plan on getting into a battle with either of those guys."
Ferry adds that he’s feeling “pretty strong” and “pumped” to be back.
