A good "How stuff works" ( in addition to the one linked to above):

http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke1.htm

Try using the search function to ask some of your questions. There is a wealth of knowledge that will explain the differences in how the bikes handle and respond, as well as mechanical and political issues surrounding the two types of engines.

Another really good exercise is to go to the manufacturer web sites and look at the different models of bikes, and the spec sheets. It will at least give you a starting ground to understanding which bikes are which.

A couple of mandatory reads:

http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=133979
http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=118083

Also, please repost your "what bike should I get" as its own thread in the "what bike should I get forum". You'll need to be patient however. Beware the "quick and dirty advice" and consider taking some time reading the advice given to others to get a better idea of things.

The spell check (red underline in as you type) will help with any spelling issues.

i asked where you lived to check on www.craigslist.com. a good starters bike for you would be a crf230. i couldnt find one though. good luck

I totally disagree.

A CFR230F is a slow, heavy trailbike.

A much better bike, more suited for his purpose would be a newer model 2 stroke 125.

Something between 2002 and 2006 would be fine. Can probably find quite a few for sale around his area for well under $3000.

I am inclined to agree with Indy, this kids wants to pay the MX game. A trail bike won't even be a good start. The thumpers will likely have him riding over his head on day 2. A 125 smoker (2-stroke) can be a ton of fun for the first year, while teaching you how to ride well.

I was going to say a 125 or a 250 4 stroke, but I worried that it would be way to powerful for him since he is a beginner
