flywheel rotation?

i was adjusting my timing yesterday and of course i siliconed every thing up and last night i was thinking, which way does the ignition flywheel actually spin if you look at it through where the cover is? i though if you spin your stator plate counter clockwise, you would be advancing the timing, but i also thought the flywheel spun clock wise so this would contradict itself. if any one knows that would be great, other wise i wil pull my cover off again tonight and turn the motor over to see.
