This is the response I got from FMF tech support, any other ideas about how to find out if I can use this silencer in certain decibel limited areas, parks etc, I just figured since it was a spark arrester they would have tested the decibel limit on it since parks may limit sound levels!? I find this hard to believe that FMF doesn't even know or test this pipe. Any one using this pipe or have found info about it? Cause I plan on riding in areas that has limits of 96 or 98 decibel levels, any other good silencer(with spark arrestor) options?

This was my email to FMF>: Thanks for the quick response, I couldn't seem to find the decibel level on the turbine core 2 silencer, I know its a spark arrestor but whats the decibel limit on that one?

This was their response :(

Do not know , we don't test that model silencer the only one we sound test is the Q muffler .

forgot to add this to my first post

thats good to hear, is there one that alot of people say is a great pipe all around, i want maybe alittle bit more sound but I want to be able to ride in national parks etc and good with sound levels at the same time, any other brands or awesome silencers that fix my needs its for a 03 KDX 220. I want good bottom end but to have the top end as well.

re: 'it is U.S. forest aproved so hast to be quiet and passed all test'

Which has absolutely nothing to do with YOUR bike, being tested by someone that knows what they are doing.......or not, using a device that is working properly or not.

While a stamp of 'approved' may mean something when it comes to whether or not you can use the unit in the woods (provided you haven't defeated the arrestor), a pipe that is supposed to meet sound level restrictions is worth squat when the LEO (law enforcement officer) wands you and says, 'Here's your ticket.'

A properly packed TCII shouldn't have any problem meeting a 98db limit. But then, neither should a PC 'approved' S/A.......mine last weekend got a 99db at tech. Just repacked. Properly.

You should be able to find someone locally that can test your bike.

Presumeably, if an S/A was purchased that was advertised to meet 'X' standard...and it didn't pass a tech, I'd be expecting my parts guy to be taking it back.

....else I'd be beating him over the head with it.

maybe I'm the one confused but on the FMF site there are dyno charts showng their silencers on different bikes, and giving read outs of the gains?! I mean 4-10HP in gains seems good compared to the total bikes power, thats a good percentage increase, or will you not notice that gain while riding? Seems more than just for the noise If I wanted it louder I'm thinkin drill some holes in the muff save your money.....

this is from Canadians modification page

Step One: Replacing the stock silencer will result in a modest increase in performance and a meaningful reduction in weight. I would recommend a woods friendly spark-arresting silencer. They’re quieter than the free flow silencers and are "Forestry Legal" for those riding on public land. If you need to run a spark-arrester look at the FMF Turbine Core II (model SA-7-202) or the Pro Circuit Spark Arrester (model SK95200DSO) among others. If a free flow silencer is more to your liking consider the FMF Power Core II (model 7-202) or the Pro Circuit (model SK95200D-304) among others. Many people have commented that they are surprised to see installing an aftermarket silencer all the way down at Stage Five, its a very popular mod. The stock silencer performs quite well and the average rider wouldn't likely report a meaningful difference in performance after installing and after-market silencer. Its just not a very big bang for your buck performance modification. If your goal is to keep the bike as quiet as possible you won't find a better silencer than what comes stock, its an acoustical black hole.

I think I read somewhere that the Turbine Core Q is rated at 93 db so I'd say somewhere down the line FMF tested it. They are in the business of making performance pipes and not as much worried about SPL's I'd figure. If your so worried then go down to your local Radio Shack and buy a SPL meter for about $30 and test it yourself. I am sooooo lucky I don't live in an area where I have to worry about sound levels OR a Forestry approved device. Ahhhh...........the land of the free....?

The statement about no gains may hold true for the TC but not for the Power Core II. A noticeable difference in power I experienced when I installed one on my bike.

What is a SPL meter?
The TC2 is very loud, it all depends on who u ask and what pipe their using. Most of U are allready def- if the sound that your bike makes now does not hurt your hearing will you have already damagedyour hearing to the point wereyou it don't bother you, I know that the TC2 and PC are well above 100 Dbs. Normally all 2 strokes and 4 stroke unplugged are this loud. I know this all to well, i am 100% def in my right ear. I bought the Q pipe thinking it would be easier to ride and not hurt what hearing i have left, but i was wrong. I still have to put a plug in my good ear. 93 db may be park reg. but its not going to save your hearing. At 90 dB for 4 hours a day you will begain to damage your hearing. At a 100 dB for 15min damage will occur.
At 120dB the damage immediate. After that your ears will be in severe Pain.

So think about it, I'm only here to help and i know the damages.

At the last poker run I did my 220 was measured at 94db. I have a TC2 with rev pipe, about two years use on it and haven't gotten around to repacking it yet.

GreenHornet is right in saying that pretty much any bike is well over 100db. At the RPM range that they test them at for regulation the TC2 is well under 100db though. They don't test them at WOT under a load. So....your bike can be well within regulation and still be loud enough on the trail to cause some hearing damage.

If I was real worried about it, I would ask people that ride in sound tested, USFS areas what they use. You will NOT get 4-10 HP gain from a silencer on a KDX200 or 220. [/B]

not trying to smart or anything but are you speaking from experience or are you just speaking off the top of your head.....

I better free flowing exhaust will give gains correct? in that case isn't the TC2 a better flowing exhaust, I was just going by the dyno charts just looking at a range on the FMF site under the kawasaki. Just don't wanna by a silencer if the stock one will do the same thing, ya know save money for something else?

THeir is never going to be a Hi performance pipe of any kind that is going to be quite and still give loads of horsepower. I have come to grips and i try not to complain about it but that is the way its going to be if you want HP. About the helmet that i'm sorry to say is BS Helmets don't really help much in hearing pprotection- I 've tried it , my ears still ring after 20 mins of riding. The reason you it don't bother you is because you have already lost that much hearing-- your still losing it even when you don't think so. I wear plug all the time. But hey it's your life you only live once so please do what every the H@ll want to do. Thanks and have a Majestic day!

does any one know the actual weights of the stock and the TC2?
I, like many kdx'ers, would like my bike to shed unnecessary lbs, but if there isnt a lot of diff, ill keep the stock.
