It's a side valve engine, think Ford flathead.

a much more compact design than the OHV and OHC setups, to be sure. Obviously the power isn't there or we'd see this on race bikes.

Good torque, light weight & more compact is all that really matters for the trials market so I'm suprised it wasn't tried previously.
