i went on another website. I forget the guys name, I think he is a factory rider for honda. Well he crashed and is paralyzed from the waist down. He is still riding. They made a special set up for him to hold his legs in place on the bike. and he has to be sitting down all the time but the guy is still doing pretty good.

Ricky James, and David Bailey has ridden that bike. The footage exists on the net, and I am pretty sure it has been posted here before.

Your family is fortunate that you recognize what's important. At this stage in recovering the best thing might be not to think about anything MX, just recover and go from there. Do realize sons/daughters and young riders can benefit from older riders. We're great for lapper practice and can teach the fastest rolling techniques. If you in fact have the passion you don't have to quit the sport... teach techniques, substitute jumping with rubbing in corners. You can still have alot of fun while the same time help out the younger guys. Neat thing about MX is there's always a place to fit in no matter how old or beat up that's what makes all dirt bike athletes unique.

Get well soon just doesn't seem appropriate... get well and get back in the game (safely) that'll do!

ps. if your not sure about selling your bike and gear you best lock it up as your wife my just relieve you of any decision.

updated again

after meeting with the specialist he told me that I had punctured my left lung during the crash but somehow the hole clotted up by the time I got to the E.R.. My orders now have changed from rest for two weeks to lift nothing over 15 lbs for 4 weeks, no coughing, running, heavy breathing, etc....

I'm thankful it was nothing bad. The doctor at the time of the crash missed the blood clot on the xray and it was found later by a friend of his reviewing my case.

Good for you... listen to what the doc says and don't get stupid when you first start feeling better. Upside among the obvious...
... no...heavy breathing, etc....
is you can cancel that internet Viagra perscription and simply substitute with brain video's when on your pain meds.. worked great for me.

Hope you get feeling better soon. In so far as hanging up the riding boots... decision for another day. Good Luck to you and your family!

:whoa: Ah man I hate to read about someone having misfortune like this, get well and trust your heart to your discission bro, your family is your life not a hobby. I think reading this post has opened my eyes allot as I have a wife and 2 kids that I do not want to leave here without a dad :( . I've had crashes and lost teeth, busted ribs, my knees are shot, my left hip is in constant pain after jamming it hard in it's socket a couple of years ago and I am not ready for anything like you went through, I think I'm gona roll the doubles from here on out  .

Sorry to hear about your crash. After every injury I re-evaluate my roll in this sport.

I'm 35 and often wonder why I do it... but I love it and that is the only reason I can give.

I ride less and less but I still ride. More trails than track anymore and when it is the track I take a lot of precautions.

However, after an accident like yours I can't say I would ever come back. Especially with children you have.

Just don't give up on the sport. Look at Gomer... he is still around and he can't ride for **** anymore... I can probably beat him in a 5 lap race :p But the sport needs him because he is a great guy.

Stay in it... maybe you'll have a great impact on another rider even without riding.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I know exactly what you are going through...my rods in my ankle will be taken out on March 20th. I hurt myself on a SX track back in December. I landed on my left ankle on the face of the second lifter and lauched straightup to land on my asp. Everyone I know who does not ride cycles expected me to never get on a cycle again. Remember how much fun you were having up to that point. Injuries happen on the dirt and the severity is relative to your speed at impact, your physical condition and your ability to crash or not to crash. My injury was worst than most ankle injuries and I also crushed T12 and L1 in my back. Pain=no fun. You don't want anything coming between you and your ability to take care of your family. I hope you heal quickly. Injuries have a way of increasing your vision by letting you know what is important in your life. I wouldn't sell off anything either until you are able to ride again, and then make that decision. Peace be with you.

i feel your pain, i used to ride BMX... one of my buddys reshaped the lip of one of the jumps on our practice track and i ended up breaking both wrists, breaking left side of collor bone and shattering my left should... later wreks lead me to not be able to pedal a bike anymore so i switched to motor power and i just take it easy!
hope you heal quickly!! best of luck.

Sorry to hear about your injury. Your mind and your heart are in the right place. Take care of your family and your self first.

Just don't sell all you stuff just yet. Wait till after you heal and you have a clear mind and decide that riding is not for you anymore.

Get well and good luck.

I did the same thing in the desert in my 30's.I love to ride,so I just don't hang it out
on the really fast stuff anymore.I also took up trials which is more fun than most people would believe. It's hard to get that hurt at 3mph!Good luck on your recovery.

I do not ride tracks as they are not designed with safety in mind. Even tabletops can be dangerous if the lip is messed up. I never learned to jump anyway, we learned to fly.

Good point about table tops. I was riding 2 weeks ago and had one of my worst crashes ever. The track was soft and getting really rutted I went over the finish line table top about a 30 to 40 foot jump. I couldnt see due to to rut but there must have been a kicker in the face of the jump. I went over the handle bars and landed with all my weight on my left shoulder. I broke my left collar bone, seven ribs on my left side, put a hole in my left lung. My wife would like it if I would quite riding but she know that this is my passion. My best advice for anyone riding is to have disability insurance. I will be out of work for at least 8 weeks but I will still be getting a paycheck. I know that all of you dont have access to disability insurance but if you can look into it and spend the money every week its worth it if you ride. Im a big guy so it seems that when I go down its a little worse than the average sized rider. I am going to change my riding to trail riding and just have fun and give up MX because that is where all of my bad injuries have happened. I know I can still get hurt but Im going to give it a try and see how it works out for me. I did think about my family but my wife and have talked and she is ok with me riding as long as I tone it down and give up MX and I am ok with that. I do enjoy MX but most of all I just want to ride and be out there on my bike. I hope your ok and heal fast but most of all do what is right for you and your family. Good Luck! Rob

Well, be careful on the trails, I once saw a man walk of a track that is nestled in the woods. I never saw him while I was on the track, but he rode off into the woods, broke his CP, and had a stick push it's way between his helmet and face. It was within 6 inches of his throat. While rare on an MX track, this sounds like a reasonable scenario on the trails.
