The Pros are coming to the area Oct. 20-21. I drove out by the farm where the race is held this past weekend to check it out. I took I-74 to the crawfordsville exit then followed 231 south thru town. After passing thru town I took SR 47 about 1 mile where I came to the sign pointing to the farm on the right. This place is usually very good for racing and spectating. They allow over night camping which most people do. The track is well laid out and well groomed. The last several weeks rains have turned the creek crossings into river crossings. This should be good to watch. The ground seems to be in fairly good shape considering all the rain. I think it will be ok unless it rains a lot the day before or on race day. Is anyone going?

Riding or watching

Hey Kevin, are you going to race? If so, what class and bike? I like your choices of bikes. I just got rid of my XR630 and am riding a 2000 DRZ400E. I trail ride and run some B class Harescrambles here and in KY.Hows the riding in southern Illinois.

Yes, I plan on racing, call me a sandbagger but, I'm going to run Vet C. My district card says I run heavyC.
I know this isn't on the topic but this is my excuse, I got screwed trying to go back to the C class after runnung 3, B races ( finishing next to last in 1 and dnf'ing the other 2) in the Mid-South series, the promoter said if I tryed to run C again he'd take away my AMA card, so I run B now in that series and just ride for fun.
I'm sure nobody else does this at the GNCC's:D I just wont ride the 3hr races anymore.
Any way,I'll be riding my 520EXC, it's got an American flag sticker on the front # plate and a smily:) face on the headlight.
We've got an 80acre woods behind our house that I ride in weekly, not much public riding except Little Egypt off of rt13 west of Harrisberg and alot of harescrambles.

I'll be there. Green Ford cargo van with an '01 KTM 300 MXC, my wife Anne and a big Alaskan Malamute dog. We may have a couple of buddies with, or it may just be the two of us, but we definitely plan to be there. I've ridden the race the past two years and had a ball. The course is a lot of fun, looking forward to it!

Yes, I will be there but not riding. I plan on tooling around on my Honda and taking pictures. If anyone would like a picture of themselves, please feel free to hunt me down before the race and ask. I would be happy to. I usually hang around the "big" hills and the mud crossings quite a bit. Hope you all have fun!

Anne,

You should run it! Ride the Women's class, they run with the minis on the Saturday before. It is a fun little trail, not the monster that they put everyone on for Sunday. Dave and I rode it a couple years ago-- I rode the Saturday Women's class, and he rode the Sunday morning 'C' class.
Then we both got to watch the fast guys in the afternoon.

Ride on Saturday, and take pictures on Sunday! :)

(Just do it! :D )

Actually, last year I was going to do it, but they changed it. The women now run with the C class on Sunday a.m.---and yes, it is on the monster course. We parked next to Heidi last year and she runs the whole series. She is a very good rider. In addition, we have been over the for the past 2 years now and I have been intimidated by the size of the hills--especially the one they call "Papa, Mama, and baby". Hopefully this year they won't look that bad to me because I have made major improvements in my riding ability. I will definitely ride in the morning next year.;)

Sounds like you know alot about the race. I rode it once 2 years ago, but dont remember much. If you dont mind I would like to look you up sunday morning, I should be there by 7:30 I hope.( is there a time change there)By the way I am close to you I live in Kankakee IL. Bob what do you think about the way the class's compared to the district 17 class. I am in the big A in 17 but am Just a good B rider. Can I ride something like Vet A or something? I dont really care what I get its all for fun.

I read what you said about little Egypt in Harrisburg. My entire family lives in harrisburg(aunts cousins, uncles) I live 50 miles south of Chicago and get down a couple of times a year. I would love to take my bike and an extra day next time. I was wondering is this place a legal place open to the public or private property? I would appreciate any info on it, and maybe we could hook up there this fall, I will be coming down around Nov. 8,9,10.if the weather holds out maybe something will work out. If you want email mail at sned@famvid.com. Thanks and maybe we can talk this weekend.

Anne,

Well, forget what I said, then! Actually, it's probably a good thing that they run the Women's class with the C class, rather than the minis. Better for the Women, better for the minis, all the way around.

I think even the morning 'C' course was somewhat shorter than the afternoon 'Pro' course. Those hills are pretty intimidating. There are a couple different (albeit slower) alternate routes for the Papa hill that anyone can ride up.

Heidi is a good rider-- I haven't seen her ride, just read about her exploits in Trail Rider. She rides enduros competitively in the 'B' class now. :scream:
(Something I hope to be when I grow up!)

Look's like good weather for the rest of the week and weekrnd, should be a good time at this event.
Little Egypt is a privatly owned 400acre park that is open to any one $11. for an IL offroad permit and $10. a day to ride, there is enuf riding to satisfy for a day for sure, the terain varies from easy to dificult, lots of fun riding.
I'll be doing the Mid-South Winter Harescrambles Series this fall and winter so I'm pretty much done just riding, but if I find you this weekend we"ll talk:)

Crawfordsville GNCC

HI LORI,

Lori, it's been a while since I've talked to you. How have you been? Since Six-Days things have been so busy just getting back into the swing of things. So are you going to the GNCC this weekend? That would be awesome if you were. I am going. We're going down on Friday cause my boyfriend is riding the quads Sat. morning. Than, i'll ride Sunday. You should ride and also talk Anne into riding. I went to St. Clairsville last weekend and Heidi and I were the only girls riding. We need some more to riders. Just ride it would be fun!! ~~Mandi~~

Lori---no problem---I would rather ride with the C's instead too. I am looking forward to talking to Heidi again. I remember her encouraging me last year to get into racing and what fun it was. I just have such a ball over there riding around and taking pictures that I don't know if I want to change that yet. In addition, Bob always worries a lot when we ride at the same time, so it may be better to wait until next year. He is probably going to ride in the B class next year and then he can watch while I race. And, of course, my last race (at Buffalo a couple of weeks ago) I crashed pretty hard and am still trying to get over that mentally.

Mandi, I look forward to meeting you. We are going to camp out Sat night, so be sure to look for us. I am still pretty new to racing and that place has intimidated me, so I doubt I will race. Hope to meet you. I will be cheering for you and Heidi!

Mandi,

I'd love to go, but the drive from NY to IN is a bit much! We're thinking that next year we'll try to hit some more of the local GNCC races and ECEA enduros. This year we were booked up almost every weekend with HS races.

Good luck to everyone attending! Anne, I'll expect to see pictures posted afterwards!

Jsned, we look forward to meeting you on Sunday. We should be fairly easy to find with our green pepper Ford cargo van and the big Alaskan Malamute dog. Feel free to stop by. We'll probably be camping at the track on Saturday night, so we'll obviously be there early. You're right, we don't live that far from each other and hopefully we can hook up and do some riding with you in the future. As far as the classes compared to Dist. 17, it's hard to guage. I think there are a lot of sandbaggers, so either Vet A or Vet B should be fine. I've ridden in a few GNCCs over the years and the really nice thing I've found is that no matter how fast or slow you may be, there's so much competition that you have always have riders to race with and chase. That makes it a lot of fun. I know in a lot of our local races, things get spread out and you're often running alone, but a GNCC is more like dicing with a pack of friends for a couple of hours...great stuff.

Look forward to meeting jsned and anyone else who wishes to drop by. We should have another DRNer with us, WoodChuck. Good luck to all, and hey Lori, NY to Indy isn't THAT FAR! Well, OK, maybe. How about next year we'll meet you guys at a GNCC or two?

Kevin,
Good luck to you and everyone else who's going. I HAD big plans on going, but that won't be happening. Instead, I'll be on the couch at Casey doing the grass track mx. I haven't ridden since Labor day, so I'll fade after about a lap. It'll still be fun though. Tell Don I got him some free press in the paper Thursday.(sports page) Good luck and be safe!!!

Anyone know the results from this race, mainly the pro bike class. There is one lone New Zealander in it, 663, Paul Whibly(sp), maybe be a contender next year for the title if he gets a ride.

Oh man, what a corse. Like it say's it's the Iron Man.
Watt's was sporting a tricked out hairdoo, ala mohawk and I think that it's what gave him the edge he needed on the last lap on the 520EXC.

1 Watts
2 Andrews
3 Hatch
4 Hawk
5 Laferty

I could be wrong about 3-5 but I know it was Watts and Andrews 1-2.

results

I think Keidroski was 4th.Rodney Smith must have dropped out early because I saw him up near the podium in steet clothes.Andrews seemed a little disgusted with Watts after the race. Maybe it was just me but I think something was up between the two of them. Did Watts burn up the motor on the 520 on the podium? It billowed out smoke or steam after his burn out. Shane was able to reel Fred in easily every time they got out into the open field areas. Andrews took control several times in the woods but I think he was simply out powered on the fast staights. I saw Watts crash twice in the woods but would recover and catch back up out in the fields.

I'm not sure what went on there. But at the St. Clairsville, OH race a few weeks prior, Andrews (who won the race) ripped Watts (DNFed) from the podium for his remarks in Dirt Rider Magazine from a few months ago. He said something to the effect that Watts indicated that American riders aren't tough enough to finish without crashing and that motivated him to "kick his butt". That got a few ooohs, aaahs, and cheers from the crowd. A little rivalry is a good thing.

I've been riding with Heidi since she first threw a leg over a dirt bike. She is an excellent rider, bound to only get better. The one thing that impresses me most about her is nothing intimidates her, no matter what terrain she rides. She is about the only female that will ride with us up in the Berkshires. She even has a hill named after her by the Berkshire Trail Riders.
She would love for more women to race the GNCCs she likes the competition. Hopefully next year more will ride. Now with the series over maybe we can get her to race the next NETRA enduro. The guys hate when she beats'em.
