Help How to identify a bike year & model?

I am about to buy a YZ 125 advertised as a 2000 model & want to know how to identify if it really is or not - can you tell from the frame number ?
If so where can I find a cross reference list ?

Find the 17 digit VIN number on the frame and look at the 10th digit if the 10th digit is:

B=81
C=82
D=83
E=84
F=85
G=86
H=87
J=88
K=89
L=90
M=91
N=92
P=93
R=94
S=95
T=96
V=97
W=98
X=99
Y=00
1=01
2=02
3=03
4=04

Thanks for yopur help - but the frame number on this bike is *4XM-014260*

I asked at my local Yamaha dealer & he advised that the 4XM bit means that its a 1997 model year YZ125.

I guess they use different number formats over the pond inthe US
