96 to 01 yz's had the same body work

You can get most pieces in white, black. & reflex blue (the newer blue).
In the past you could get yellow & navy blue (stock 96 blue), but good luck finding them now.

is there any way to put '02 and newer plastics on an older bike, drilling holes or something

Sure. You might need some long bolts and it will probly look funky, but you could bolt 'em on.
