I'm looking for advice, please give me your opinions.

I recently purchased a '00 WR400F. I like the bike except the exhaust and rough suspension. I want to work on the exhaust first.

With the OEM baffle installed, it is quiet but very sluggish. With the baffle removed, the slug in it goes away, but it is way to loud and harsh. I want to find a silencer that controls the sound without going all the way back to slug. I realize that I am asking the million dollar question, but which silencer will get the noise under control and represent a good value?

I have looked at a White Brothers E series. It seems to be good quality but I have not heard one on a WR400. Do any of you use the E series? Do you like the sound?

Any other suggestions?

FMF Makes a "quiet" series that you might be interested in. http://www.fmfracing.com/01/powercorefourq.cfm
Supposedly drops the sound from 99 to 93 db, while still adding hp. As usual, take the HP thing with a grain of salt.

Heard good stuff about the E series as well. I've never heard either.

dirtbikedad,

keep the stock exhaust, it's not bad flowing. instead look into the vortip insert (USD $57) from www.finelinesuspension.com -- you can also order them thru www.rockymountainmc.com plus there's a pic there...

the vortip significantly cuts noise but leaves the power just about the same as wide open. i've got one on my wr250f now, it's the same part # that's used on the wr400 and wr426. if you ask around with the wr owners at the trails you may be able to borrow one for 10 minutes. it attaches & detaches in 10 seconds with a single bolt and requires no modifications to the stock muffler. so you can take it off in a jiffy if you want to ride wide open. also, ask the guys over on www.thumpertalk.com in the wr400 forum for some impressions. eg.

and finally don't forget to disconnect the grey wire for more power...

All I can say is if its quiet you're looking for, do not go with the E-Series. A buddy of mine had one on his '98 YZ400F and his '01 WR426F, and it is very loud. On his WR, its louder than the stock exhaust with the baffle out.
