the xr is a trail bike while the crf is a motocross bike. XR is air cooled, crf is liquid cooled. XR is much heavier, CRF is light. they are completely different bikes. Both are good bikes, just depends on what you want to do.

OK... Not anymore.

Honda has started to "market" XR type bikes with CRF names.

It USED to be that CR (and now CRF) meant race and XR ment trail/enduro.

Here is a rundown

XR type bikes (aircooled/generally trail oriented)
Any bike named XR. (50/70/80/100/250/400/650*)
*650R is a desert race bike

Now the confusing part: the CRF 150 and CRF230 are upgraded XR 100 and 200 bikes! NOT really part of the "CRF" line-up at all!

They are basically bigger XR's with new plastic and for the 230 an E-start!

The CRF 250 and CRF 250X as well as the CRF 450 are the race bike versions

to confuse you even more the new 04's XR's are now called CRF's! They have the newer style but are the same bikes (as in XR50,70,80,100)

Its good they straightened everything up now tho. it used to be very confusing. silly honda.

so now, all CRFs are just their 4 strokes, and the CRF 250 and CRF 450 are their motocross 4 strokes.

correct! The last letter is the only true give away now, as in CRF230 "F" or CRF250"X" and CRF450"R"... R is for race and F is for fun or family and X is for crossbread I guess!

Yep, I was just stepping by to "eat my words" as I saw the new Honda Commercial,

NOW all the smaller thumpers are CRF's 50 through 230

(I didn't hear mention of the XR250 or the XR 400)
